Campers' Guide to Outdoor Cooking: cooking outdoor utensil

When camping and hiking, it is essential to find the right cooking outdoor utensil and cooking hardware. In this first multi-part series of Campers’ Guide to Outdoor Cooking, I will discuss some common outdoor cooking hardware when traveling light.

First up: the pot.

What Pot is Right for you?

The cooking pot may seem like a simple piece of utensil; it is just a concave piece of metal used to transfer heat. But it is one of the hiker’s most important tools. It is used to boil water for your beverages and meals, to gather water from a nearby source, to eat out of if you do not have a bowl, and to hold your stove while hiking to safe space in your backpack. The pot is an essential cooking outdoor utensil when hiking and camping.

Pot Construction

Take a look at the number of options you can choose from for pot construction.

Aluminum: Be sure to go with a nonstick coating if you go with aluminum. Although it is lightweight and generally inexpensive, aluminum is more prone to denting and scorching compared to steel.

Stainless steel: Although it is heavier, stainless steel is more durable than aluminum. As with its namesake, it is easier to keep clean because of its slick surface.

Titanium: The more expensive choice than the above two, this amazingly lightweight, strong metal will reduce ounces from your backpack load but it is also expensive and prone to scorching.

Composite: These pots are usually made of a combination of aluminum and stainless, with the stainless steel on the inside to minimize sticking. While this variation of cooking outdoor utensil offer a nice balance of weight and durability, they are more expensive than plain aluminum or stainless steel.
